His mother was from the Kaytetye people of the Barrow Creek region.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eRex developed an interest in painting from an early age. He has spoken of renowned Australian Aboriginal artist \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAlbert Namatjira\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e as an important early influence and was also influenced by Central Australian and Arrernte artists. His older brother, artist Reggie Sultan, encouraged his interest in painting and gave Rex his first watercolour paints and board.
