Josephine Maralngurra is known not only for her painting but also for her basket weaving. Her basket weaving reflects the expertise and creativity of Aboriginal women from West Arnhem Land, who have practiced this art for generations.

Using natural fibers, such as pandanus leaves, Josiephine follows a meticulous process to create her woven pieces. First, pandanus leaves are harvested, stripped, and boiled with natural dyes made from plants, roots, or ash to achieve vibrant, earthy colors. Once dyed, the leaves are dried and woven by hand using traditional techniques passed down through her family and community.

Josiephine’s baskets are both functional and decorative, showcasing intricate patterns and bold colors. These baskets are often used for practical purposes, like carrying food or storing items, but they also hold cultural significance, representing the connection between people, land, and tradition. The designs and weaving styles can tell stories, symbolise local flora and fauna, or express individuality and creativity.
