Painted in bold acrylics, the piece features dynamic fish forms in shades of blue and green, flowing across the canvas with rhythm and energy. The painting reflects Huddleston’s deep connection to Country, combining traditional storytelling and symbolism with a contemporary artistic style. The layered textures and movement in the composition evoke both the natural environment and the cultural significance of freshwater life in Aboriginal heritage.
About the Artist:
Les Huddleston Lipwurrunga was born near Penrith, NSW, and moved with his family to Mulgoa Mission after the WWII bombing of Darwin. In 1971, Les returned to Darwin to reconnect with his ancestral lands and sought guidance from the Ngardi elders, beginning his career as a respected Aboriginal artist. His family returned to Ngukurr shortly afterward.
Les has become an internationally recognised painter and has served as a Cultural Adviser for over 35 years. He is also an accomplished didgeridoo player, performing at high-profile events including the 2017 Rugby League World Cup in Darwin and the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. His artwork blends traditional stories, cultural knowledge, and contemporary expression, making it highly sought after by collectors of Aboriginal art.
