Manuel Nganjmirra is a contemporary Aboriginal artist from Gunbalanya (Oenpelli) in West Arnhem Land who works in the Kunwinjku tradition. His paintings draw on ancestral stories and everyday life on Country, featuring Mimi spirits, Lightning Man and animals from his homeland such as fish, birds and other native creatures. Using fine rarrk (cross-hatching), elongated forms and earthy ochre tones, his work reflects the deep cultural knowledge and continuing connection to land, water and wildlife in West Arnhem Land.
This painting of the freshwater crocodile with lilies reflects the strong connection between land, water and life in West Arnhem Land. The freshwater crocodile is an important animal from the artist’s homeland, often associated with calm waters, billabongs and balance within the natural environment. Surrounded by water lilies, the work celebrates the wetlands of Gunbalanya, showing respect for the animals, plants and stories that continue to sustain culture and Country.
