About the Artwork

My Home Land is an original Aboriginal landscape painting by Central Australian artist Rex Sultan Jabangardi, depicting his homeland around Barrow Creek in the Northern Territory.

Rich in the colours of the Australian outback, the painting captures the striking contrasts of Central Australia. Brilliant blue ranges stretch across the horizon, framed by white-trunked gum trees and set against warm red, orange and ochre earth. Native grasses, rocky outcrops and scattered vegetation complete the expansive desert landscape.

About Rex Sultan Jabangardi

Rex Sultan Jabangardi is an Aboriginal artist from the Barrow Creek region of Central Australia, approximately 300 kilometres north of Alice Springs. His mother was from the Kaytetye people of the Barrow Creek region. 

Rex developed an interest in painting from an early age. He has spoken of renowned Australian Aboriginal artist Albert Namatjira as an important early influence and was also influenced by Central Australian and Arrernte artists. His older brother, artist Reggie Sultan, encouraged his interest in painting and gave Rex his first watercolour paints and board. Rex completed his first painting at approximately 13 years of age. 

Today, Rex Sultan Jabangardi is recognised for his distinctive interpretations of Central Australian Country, including landscapes and works depicting Fire Dreaming and spinifex. His paintings combine strong colour, detailed line work and imagery drawn from the landscape and his connection to Country. 

My Home Land demonstrates another side of Rex’s practice, with its expansive landscape composition reflecting the influence of the Central Australian landscape painting tradition while remaining distinctly his own.

An original piece of Australian Aboriginal art, this work offers a beautiful representation of Barrow Creek and the Central Australian landscape.
